  • HMD Global begins Android 8.0 Oreo rollout for Nokia 6 (2018) and Nokia 7.
  • Oreo-based features and January Android security patches added to China-exclusive duo.
  • Original Nokia 6 stable Oreo rollout to begin “soon”.

Announced just over a week ago in China, the Nokia 6 (2018) is yet another impressive-looking entry in HMD Global’s mid-range army of phones. At the time, however, we bemoaned that the $230 device only runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box rather than Google’s latest OS upgrade, Oreo.

Now, HMD Global has confirmed that it is rolling out Android 8.0 Oreo to both the second-generation Nokia 6 and last year’s Nokia 7. The Finnish OEM confirmed the update via Weibo, noting that the upgrade will offer a smoother experience, gesture controls, as well as all the rest of the bonus features we’ve come to expect from Oreo, and the January Android security patches.

As it stands, the Nokia 7 and Nokia 6 (2018) are both exclusive to the Chinese market, although it seems likely that at least the new Nokia 6 will make it to other regions, including the US.

Both devices are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 630 SoC and 16 MP rear cameras which combine with their front-facing counterparts to take what HMD Global calls “bothies”.

The original Nokia 6, which launched in the US in July 2017, is currently going through an Oreo beta program. In the aforementioned Weibo post, HMD Global confirms that a stable rollout is coming “soon”, presumably once the beta testing is complete.

With the Nokia 8 update already in the bag, HMD Global is making decent progress with its Oreo rollout across its entire smartphone range which already offers a pure, skin-less Android experience.
